what is cancer

Cancer is a disease of cells. It is a disorder - in which differentiated body cells undergo changes at the molecular level. These molecular changes cause the body cells to lose their normal cell regulation, characteristics, and functions.

When normal cell (biological) regulation is altered, the cell loses all its normal cell function, causing it to transform into a cancer cell. These transformed cells have special capabilities which allow the cancer cells to have an advantage over
normal cells.

The molecular change i.e. the change from a normal cell to a cancer cell, occurs at
the level of genes, thus some cancers become genetic and inherited. The transformed cell slowly develops into a tumor. The development of a transformed cell into a tumor requires a series of conditions. Examples of such conditions are exposure to substances that change genetic content, poor immune system, and a host of other factors.

Transformation of a normal cell into a cancerous cell can occur in any part of the body. Thus a cancer is classified according to the affected part of the body organ system. The most common ones are breast cancer, cervical cancer, lung cancer, colorectal cancer and prostate cancer. neoplastic which can be referred to as either Benign, or malignant

Neoplasm or Neoplasia means growth of new cell or „proliferation.
Neoplasia is the growth of new cells, but this is not required for replacement
of damaged cells. Neoplasia is considered abnormal cell growth

Neoplasms are characterized by the following:-
#uncontrolled functioning,
#unregulated division,
#uncontrolled growth, and
#abnormal motility.

Other features that have been identified with neoplasms are as follows:-
#Neoplasms do not obey the laws of normal tissue growth. Their growth:-
-often extends beyond the boundaries, and fails to fulfill the normal function of cells in the tissue.
-Some neoplasms are harmful to the host as they often compete for space and
essentials.
-However, for a neoplastic tissue to undergo pathological changes, it will
depend on its location, growth rate and other characteristics.
